Christian Ethics: Introduction

Christian Ethics Free Course: Introduction

Introduction: Should the church take any interest in the great moral questions which confront society? Or should church leaders see their role merely as supplying a ‘religious’ dimension to life – conducting baptisms, weddings and funerals; providing church services and marking the passing of the seasons with appropriate festivals? ”Let the scientists, sociologists and politicians deal with the real world” some would say.

Or again, is the role of the church simply to preach the gospel in the power of the Spirit? If men and women repent and believe in sufficient numbers and with enough miracles taking place, then all society’s problems will be solved. Or will they? The O1d Testament prophets continually preached against religion which had no concern for the daily plight of men and women. Isaiah cries: "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:  to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter – when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?” (Isa 58:6-7)

Jesus addressed all the great issues of His day in the course of His gospel ministry. Kingdom power would be revealed in Good Samaritans, in prison visitors, in those who gave to the poor, in new marriage ethics, political attitudes and protection of the weak.

All the New Testament letters reflect this concern that the good news should touch every aspect of life. Indeed, Paul sees a day coming when God will reconcile all things through His Son.

The Cross is the great road-junction of life, the meeting place of heaven and hell, life and death, justice and injustice, the rich and the poor, men and women, religion and politics.
Obey the signals and we drive up Reconciliation Road: disobey them and we crash.

Preaching the gospel of the kingdom involves bringing the government of God into every department of life. Concern for society, its values and practices, is a central part of the church’s mission. We are called to bring God’s reconciliation to God’s world and this course is about just that. In these 10 studies we will consider some of the main issues of our day, the biblical principles which apply to them and some of the practical things we can do about them.

Ethics is a vast field and this is only the merest introduction to it, but hopefully it will help us as Christians to understand and face up to the social, ethical, medical and cultural issues around us and thus will both stimulate our concern and set us thinking along the right lines.

  2. Etics is a study I am looking forward to, In maney countries christians battle with culure matters, how ever it is what the bible say that count

  3. ethics & morality are the cornerstone of the christian faith and must be applied in the person, the home, the workplace, schools, churches and in governments at all levels. This is my definition of true christianity & its ethics as taught bby our lord & savior-Jesus Christ

  4. As we were created by God according to His image & likeness, we ought to to be like Jesus the Christ who was very much concern to guide people to the right path.
True, Jesus went back to the Father, but He left the Holy Spirit to guide us.
If a man let the Holy Spirit guides him, then he, be like Jesus as deliverer of God’s Word, and a model in godly character.
Amen, we have to be concerned.

  5. Amen…
We were commissioned by Jesus: Matthew 28:19-20, “Go therefore, make followers of all nations, baptize them in the name of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit.
Teach them to obey my commandments, and I will be with you untill the end of the world..

  6. And also Jesus said to His Followers that, “In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that people will see the good things you do. Live so that people will praise your Father in Heaven”. Mat 5:16.

  7. How and why… do people say we cant do things the way jesus done them…I put my armer on daily and in this I ask jesus to let me be christ to thouse you send… meaning that if some one needs healing then if gods sent them we need to heal them.. if some one needs jesus then we need to teach them jesus.. if god asks us to go or do then we do… so why is there this need for people to have a pastor to minister or a vicar to heal.. jesus told his apostles to go out and heal and teach the word of his father to all you come arcoss are we not his apotsles i look forward to the day people stop hiding behind the pastor or vicar and stands up to be counted as indeviduals and thats why im doing this course to no all i need to in fighting for my father the spiritual battle that started when man chose to sin may god bless you all sammie a humble servant of christ jesus

  8. I think humanity in general at this day time have forgotten all about ethnics, religion and tradition. As Christians I believe we serve the same God. What I mean by that is that we have many different denominations technally competing against each other to have the physical right to claim to be the worlds largest religious organization or to see who save the most souls. It’s become commercalized in many aspects. Mankind have made there own rules to life, lifestyles ect ect… What gives man the right to twist and make our own exceptions to the rule. God is still God and means what he says. His rules never change. We can justify anything we do. Jesus is real. Amen and God Bless All.

  9. I agree with bringing God into every aspect of life for its the whole purpose of us all for our Lord said go as well as forsake not assembly so our purpose is to royalty be the light and surrender all to him for only then will we know in spirit and truth.

  10. I am a pastor malawian who would like to be equiped and moulded by the teachings of the truth. I had to take much of my time to read your home page and I have been inspired to study with you. I need to be taught the truth on how i can minister God.
